The observations are keen, heartfelt and delivered in a brutally nonchalant style. but it is a minor criticism of a debut that is as intricate as it is brash, with a style that is charmingly belligerent from start to finish. The self-aware commentary.over-reaches at times. ![]() ![]() There are strong parallels with the intelligent female narrators in the writing of Nicole Flattery and Sally Rooney. Exciting Times is an impressive, cerebral debut written with brio and humour. The exciting times mainly take place inside her head, where a vast, neurotic mind constantly analyses her own behaviour and second-guesses the actions of others. The voice is astute, sardonic and highly emotionally aware. The arch title of Naoise Dolan’s whipsmart debut novel, Exciting Times, is the first indicator of the author’s style. ![]() 6/9/2023 0 Comments About time jack finney![]() ![]() Success as a writer began for Finney when he wrote ‘5 Against the House’, his first novel, which was published in 1954 and received a movie adaptation soon after. For too long, Steinbeck's masterpiece has been taught as social history, or dismissed as an "issue novel." It's both these things, of course, but before all that, it's a terrific story. Introduction to the BookĬan a book top the bestseller list, win a Pulitzer Prize, save lives, and still be underrated? If that book is The Grapes of Wrath (1939), the answer is most definitely yes. It speaks from assumptions common to most Americans whether their ancestors came over in a stateroom, in steerage, or were already here to greet the migrants. Written in a style of peculiarly democratic majesty, The Grapes of Wrath evokes quintessentially American themes of hard work, self-determination, and reasoned dissent. Capturing the plight of millions of Americans whose lives had been crushed by the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression, Steinbeck awakened the nation's comprehension and compassion. It is also a significant event in our national history. John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath is not merely a great American novel. ![]() ![]() ![]() Each woman deals with a series of ups and downs and is faced with making a difficult decision.
